Solution Focused Therapy and its Application to

Substance Abuse Treatment

 

Class Description:

The National Standard of Addiction Counselors is to view substance abuse as a disease. Addiction is often viewed as a lifelong affliction which is progressive and requires years of therapeutic intervention coupled with active participation in a 12-step oriented support group. It is a model in which the therapist is the expert. The purpose of this class is not to challenge the effectiveness of this model. It is to explore an alternative approach in which solutions are co-created by the client and the counselor. The course teaches participants the basics of Solution Focused Therapy and presents an innovative and empowering way to apply this approach in substance abuse treatment. Outcome studies and research on this approach will also be presented.

Addiction counselors and other professionals will become familiar with this research-based approach that addresses problems from a place in which they are resolved. The target audience is any professional who has a basic understanding of clinical skills and more traditional treatment methods.

This course will explain how this approach is not only respectful of the clients? gender, spirituality, age, sexual preference, disability, and cultural needs, but relies heavily upon these factors for its success. Participants will be expected to be actively involved in role-play scenarios throughout this hands-on class. Basic counseling skills are a prerequisite for this class.
