Van Bibber Park

"A green home right in the city."
 -- Dawn Fondy, Arvada, CO

Stroll along Van Bibber Creek Trail, stop and admire the mountain view to the west and the many varieties of wildlife that pass through the park.  The wetlands observation deck provides views of ponds, marsh vegetation and an interesting mix of waterfowl.

History
Van Bibber Park is rich with historical connections. Nearby, on Ralston Creek, the first recorded gold strike in Colorado was made in 1850 by a group of prospectors on their way to California.

In the late 1850's, homesteaders who realized that Colorado's greatest wealth lay in her fertile soil began moving to the area. They dug many irrigation canals bringing water to their bountiful crops of wheat, oats, corn, hay, and strawberries.

By 1870 there were about 500 residents in the recently named nearby farming community of Arvada. News about the fertility of the area's soil reached Europe and a colony of Swedish farmers joined the other local settlers.

Just to the south, the first Roman Catholic bishop of Colorado, Joseph Machebeuf, owned a ranch that later became Mount Olivet Cemetery. To the north, Colorado's developing transportation system included the Ralston Creek Stage Road running to Boulder and Central City.

One of the trails is named "Jimmy Go" after the Person who formerly owned the property.

Natural Resources
As you look at the trees boarding Van Bibber Creek, you might see a black-capped chickadee in a tree cavity or a fox drinking from the stream. Scan the meadow where deer hide in the grass and hawks perch atop power line poles. Listen for waterfowl on the ponds, a restful stop during migration. Many animals use this area to travel safely between feeding and nesting places.

As you use Van Bibber Park, ponder the many ways people use streams and meadows, and how you can help protect our Open Space treasures.

Getting There
A large parking lot is located just south of 58th Avenue on the west side of Ward Road.  Left-hand turns from northbound Ward Road are prohibited.  Another small parking lot is located on the west side of the park at Indiana and 56th Avenue.
